William Yong, originates from Sabah, a state in Malaysia. He was awarded an Australian scholarship in 1966 to study medicine. He enrolled in a degree course in Economics at Sydney University instead. At the end of first term, he was awarded a five-year cadetship by a chartered accountancy firm to work full time and attend evening classes. Prior to fulfilling his professional year in his C.A course, he enrolled at Mitchell College of Advanced Education (now renamed Charles Sturt University) under advanced admission status and graduated with Bachelor of Business degree (Accounting Major) two years later."
